Day-by-Day Itinerary

Below is a simple overview of how the journey unfolds each day. The route takes you from Marrakech across the Atlas Mountains and into the desert regions of southern Morocco.

Along the way, you will visit historic kasbahs, palm valleys, and traditional towns before reaching the dunes of Zagora and Merzouga.

Each day brings different landscapes and experiences, giving you a good look at Morocco beyond the big cities.

Day 1: Marrakech to Zagora

Your trip starts in Marrakech in the morning. Soon you will begin climbing into the High Atlas Mountains and cross the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass.

The views from Tizi n'Tichka road are impressive and the stops along the way are perfect for photos and a cup of coffee.

One of the main highlights of the day is visiting Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This old fortified village is famous for its traditional mud buildings and has appeared in many international films.

After the visit, you'll continue toward Ouarzazate, often called the “Gateway to the Desert.” The road then follows the beautiful Draa Valley, known for its long palm groves and historic kasbahs.

By evening, you arrive in Zagora, where you will enjoy a camel ride and spend the night in a desert camp.

Day 2: Zagora to Merzouga

After breakfast, the journey continues deeper into southern Morocco. One interesting stop on the way is Tamgroute, known for its traditional green pottery and historic Quranic library.

The road passes through desert landscapes and small villages before reaching towns such as Rissani and Erfoud, which were once important trading centers in the region.

Later in the day, you arrive in Merzouga, located next to the impressive Erg Chebbi dunes. These dunes are among the largest in Morocco and offer a true Sahara atmosphere.

In the evening, you can ride a camel into the dunes and watch the sunset over the sand.

Day 3: Exploring the Merzouga Desert Area

Wake up early if you want to see the sunrise over the dunes. The light on the sand at this time of day is very beautiful.

After returning from the camel ride, the day continues with visits around the Merzouga region. One stop is Khamlia village, where local musicians perform traditional Gnaoua music.

You may also visit the seasonal Merzouga lake, which sometimes attracts birds such as flamingos. Later, you can walk through a palm grove and learn more about how people live in this desert environment.

In the evening, relax at your accommodation near the dunes.

Day 4: Merzouga to Dades Valley

Today you leave the desert and travel toward the mountain valleys. One of the main highlights is Todra Gorge, a spectacular canyon with very high rock walls.

Many visitors enjoy walking through the gorge and taking photos of the dramatic scenery.

After the visit, you'll continue to the Dades Valley, often called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” The valley is known for its unusual rock formations, green fields, and traditional villages. You will spend the night in this peaceful area.

Day 5: Return to Marrakech

On the final day, begin the drive back to Marrakech. The route passes through the Rose Valley, where roses are grown and used to produce perfumes and cosmetic products.

You will also pass through Ouarzazate again before crossing the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass.

By evening, you arrive back in Marrakech, marking the end of your desert adventure.
